A very skillful Accipitrid, closely related to the sparrowhawk. Often hunts together.

Local name कोतवाल. Attracted to burning grasslands to feed on insects. Perches on grazing animals.

Likes to bathe in dust. Nests in a tunnel dug in sloping sandy ground. Found in Asia & Africa.

It can mimic human words. Found in many parts of the world as an introduced species.

Strikes 20 times per second. It’s tongue is sticky and twice the length of it’s beak. When not in use, it rolls it’s tongue inside it’s head.

Their flocks are known as kettles & may consist of over 1000 raptors. Feathers on it’s head protect it from wasp’s stings.

Despite it’s name, it is frequently seen far away from water. A close cousin of the Kookaburra.

National bird of Bangladesh. A lively songster – can mimic songs of other birds.

State bird of Madhya Pradesh. Males acquire a long tail after a year. Both parents take care of the chicks.
